Sean Weaver’s Vintage 1961 Fender Tremolux, Serviced by Todd Sharp, Plus Both Cabinets For Sale (www.seanweaver.com)

Dear Friends, Email List, & Fellow AFM 257 Members:

Engulfed in the historic May ’10 Soundcheck Nashville floods, I wanted to ease the pain of losing my flooded ’56 tweed Tremolux. In the process I located a gorgeous blonde piggyback one with the period correct 1x10” closed back cabinet (this particular cabinet is highly elusive; having been only produced in 1961 before Fender switched to the more familiar 2x10” configuration) and “tone ring.”

Technically, I ‘spose you’d say it’s a ’62 Tremolux, given that that’s the latest date on the components, though perhaps a late ’61, given that Jeff @ Todd Sharp’s confirmed the output transformer is not original to the amp, but a real, working, splendid vintage transformer from the ‘62. And at 8-ohms it’s convenient to run it with either cab (more on this in a bit).

Since I didn’t like running all that power on a single 10” speaker, and wanted to keep the vintage vibe “right,”I tracked down an all-original period correct 2x10” Fender cab from ’62 or ’63 (still with the blonde tolex and oxblood grille cloth) from an east coast vintage guitar and amp dealer. Put a couple of Celestion Greenbacks in it and began using it considerably more.

Then the unthinkable happened. The ’56 Tremolux came back. And… I’m just not using the ’61/’62 anymore. It’s sitting here in the hallway, almost never turned on, and I’ve never been a collector. Amps, guitars, stomp boxes…they’re all instruments to me…used to make music and be cherished by those who have them. So I want it to go to a better home.

To see it go to a good home where it'll be used to make music with, I'd let it go for $3,000. In context, the 2012 Vintage Guitar Price Guide lists the values on ‘61/’62 ones from $2400 - $3000 (Exc. Low to Exc. High). For one head and one cabinet. This is both period-correct original cabinets (with matched impedances at 8 ohms) including the rare and collectible JBL D110 in the single 1x10” in the cab plus an original Oxford Alnico in need of a recone).
